Twitter faired a little better – 68% of the brands surveyed did not have their Twitter pages in the top 20 results of the Google SERP’s.

Based on the analysis of various social media pages BrightEdge found out that there was no necessary correlation between the number of friends and followers and SERP rankings. For example, the Facebook page of a leading photography equipment brand did not rank in the top 20 search results, despite having more than 160,000 fans. On the other hand, a leading auto manufacturer with only 17,307 fans had a Facebook page that ranked in the top 10 of search results.

Retailers are the most successful in optimizing their social media pages. Of the top 23 retailers surveyed, 13 have Twitter pages in the top 20 search results. The brands that are currently least effective at optimizing social media are those from the finance and insurance sector with only three of the top 43 companies having Facebook pages that rank in the top 20 search results.

Does it really matter if searchers don’t find your Facebook or Twitter page in a Google search? Google now handles 64.42% of all U.S. searches, a month-on-month loss of 3%.

Yahoo and Bing both achieved the highest success ratings, with more than 80% of all searches conducted on the two services leading to page views. Google was only able to manage a 66% success rating.

Matt Adams, managing director of the PPC, SEO and Digital marketing specialist at Go Optimisation said: “Google would argue that ‘searches’ aren’t the most reliable indicator."

"With their new features (like Google instant) and better results (Panda update), Google would argue that their users find the results/information they're looking for with fewer searches than before. However, reaction to both major changes have been mixed."

Adams said other factors also contributed to the jump in Bing-powered search, pointing to Firefox setting Bing as its default search, the new Bing-optimised versions of Internet Explorer, and the new Facebook tie-up.

Adams said this final factor is especially important. Since the incorporation of Facebook into Bing searches, the market share of Bing/Yahoo has moved from 24% in October 2010 to 30% today.

The Facebook alliance also gave Microsoft a jump on personalised social search results, coming as Google bids to make a mark in the social search market with the +1 feature.

Google sets up sting for Bing amid accusations of copied search results

Many people in SEO are of the opinion that Google is the search engine of choice when optimising your website. It’s no surprise that other search engines aspire to be as big as it, but Google has accused search engine rival Microsoft of pilfering its own search results for Bing.

The realisation dawned on Google with its team for correcting typo errors in the SERPs. Part of their duties is to monitor the performance of their search rivals, such as Bing and Yahoo!. The team noticed that any errors that they corrected would show up on Bing’s results too. However, Bing did not say that they had corrected the mistake themselves, it just ‘happened’.

Google decided to set up a sting operation to catch out the opposition. It created code that allowed it to rank a page manually for a specific search term, and attached it to obscure searches such as “hiybbprqag” and “ndoswiftjobinproduction”. The result was that when these terms were searched for, they would produce a unique web page in Google that wouldn’t crop up in other search results.

Google then had a team search for these terms using Microsoft Internet Explorer, with its Bing toolbar, and Suggested Sites enabled. Two weeks after the operation was set up, Bing displayed the Google results that had been coded by hand.

Google Fellow Amit Singhal said:

“I’ve got no problem with a competitor developing an innovative algorithm. But copying is not innovation, in my book.”

“It’s cheating to me because we work incredibly hard and have done so for years but they just get there based on our hard work… Another analogy is that it’s like running a marathon and carrying someone else on your back, who jumps off just before the finish line.”

Microsoft’s Stefan Weitz countered:

“Opt-in programs like the [Bing] toolbar help us with clickstream, one of many input signals we and other search engines use to help rank sites. This ‘Google experiment’ seems like a hack to confuse and manipulate some of these signals.”

In SEO we come across ‘scraper’ websites that scrape content from other sites all the time. They’re low quality sites consisting of nothing more than copied content from elsewhere on the web. Is Bing a scraper site now?

Google announces +1

Facebook may have once cornered the user review market, but those days are now over. On March 30th, Google announced its rival product to the Facebook ‘Like’ button, the ‘+ 1′ button, which allows users to indicate their likes in the search engine results pages.

The search engine company noted that the new feature is meant as an extension of its general social media plan, which has seen the incorporation of social media and personalised results into users’ searches. The company is now taking that one step further, allowing users to recommend pages to people they know by clicking ‘+ 1′. This means users looking for a good restaurant locally in Liverpool can access friends’ recommendations.

In taking Facebook on, the search engine might well have found the right angle. Google’s attempts to incorporate social into search have got off to a slow start. The ability to communicate, after a fashion, within the searches of people you know may be what is needed to make Google a social force.

In terms of search engine optimisation, the development is both good and bad news. The good news is that a business may be able to control these likings, at least for a short time. Google will no doubt work out any loopholes that allow site owners to take advantage. The bad news is that this system puts even more emphasis on the individual user, meaning a site owner needs to concentrate on very specific user groups when planning for website optimisation, something that makes SEO jobs just a little more complicated.

SMO requires social media research

Social media optimisation, or SMO, is something that many companies are doing with their websites as part of SEO without even knowing it. With the incredible rise in popularity of social media in the last few years, a site needs to be active to get any reaction. As your site’s users become more enmeshed with their online social communities, the best way to approach them is through their community spirit.

The methods of SMO, just like search engine optimisation, vary from site to site. You might want to simply feature a couple of affiliation buttons on your homepage. You might want to get your site into social bookmarking circles. You might install some of the numerous widgets that social media networks are now offering to participants. All of these moves are going to reap very little reward, however, if you haven’t managed to track down what your target users actually need.

Different social media sites appeal to different groups of Internet users. Digg, for instance, has a predominantly technical leaning. Twitter tends to attract users who are into mobile communication. Facebook, of course, has a broad range of users, but is so big that a little definition is needed to reach the right people.

It’s best to research your options before putting a social media plan into place. It’s not much use featuring a Digg bookmarking button on your pages if your site or your users have absolutely no technical knowledge.

If you’ve already got a few social media buttons on your pages, they probably came from the pursuit of your own interests. In most cases, these will match up quite neatly with the needs of your site users, but it is worth doing a little research. It’s just as important to have the right focus for your social media optimisation as it is for search engine optimisation.

Google Shares Android Operating Tips

Three days ago, some of you no doubt opened a present and were surprised (or not, depending on how many hints you dropped) to find an Android phone inside. Now, while we're sure you're capable of reading the manual and experimenting, here's a collection of Android tips straight from Google.

Interestingly, these pointers come from Jonathan Rosenberg, Senior Vice President of Product Management and one of only nine executive officers, rather than some Android engineer. Then one other thing we'll note: some of the tips just apply to Android 2.3 (AKA Gingerbread).

So on to the suggestions. Rosenberg recommended, "Tell your phone what to do by pressing the microphone icon next to the search box on the home screen, or long press the magnifying glass. You can tell it to send an email or text message ('send text to mom, see you for pizza at 7'), call someone ('call mom'), navigate somewhere ('navigate to pizza'), or listen to music ('listen to Mamma Mia')."

Later, Rosenberg wrote, "To copy/paste from a webpage, long press some text, drag the handles around to select the text you want to copy, and press somewhere in the highlighted region. The deal marks a big leap forward in social search and also represents a new advantage for Bing –- which Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg declared the “underdog” in search during today’s press conference -– in its quest to take market share from Google.

Starting today, Bing (Bing) users now get an experience that’s customized using Facebook Instant Personalization. For now, that means searches (where appropriate) will feature a Facebook (Facebook) module that shows you what your friends have liked as it relates to that search, as well as a smarter people search results.

The Bing and Facebook teams offered a few examples of how that might be useful during today’s press event: surfacing restaurants that your friends like, pulling in movie likes from IMDB (imdb) or articles that have been shared about a car you might be eyeing. With the like button now being used by more than two million sites and Facebook passing 500 million members, there’s now enough scale to make that type of data surface on a regular basis in search.

Beyond that, Bing is trying to dramatically improve people search, which Bing’s Senior VP Online Audience Business Yusuf Mehdi said makes up about 4% of searches. Much like Facebook’s site, Bing will recommend new friends based on mutual relationships. Bing now surfaces that data when you search for a name (for example, a “Bob Smith” that five of your friends know will come up higher than a “Bob Smith” that none of them know). From search results, you can add people as friends or send them a message.

The future gets even more interesting though. Bing and Facebook said they’re working on including like data from friends alongside each search result. Further out, the companies see an opportunity to surface people who are experts in specific subjects.

At face value, Facebook integration certainly seems to make Bing search better in some instances. I know I’d be more inclined to click on a link in search results if one of my friends had liked it. Does that make me more likely to use Bing over Google (Google)? Not necessarily, though for the examples offered –- where opinion matters –- Bing’s “decision engine” differentiator starts to make a lot more sense.

Will Facebook integration make you more likely to use Bing? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Official Google Blog: Making URLs shorter for Google Toolbar and FeedBurner

Official Google Blog: Making URLs shorter for Google Toolbar and FeedBurner

Making URLs shorter for Google Toolbar and FeedBurner

This morning, we launched updated versions of the Google Toolbar and FeedBurner that offer a new URL shortening service from Google called the Google URL Shortener. We mentioned our URL shortener as a feature in both announcements, so we wanted to say a little more about how this product works and why we're offering it.

People share a lot of links online. This is particularly true as microblogging services such as Twitter have grown in popularity. If you're not familiar with them, URL shorteners basically squeeze a long URL into fewer characters to make it easier to share with others. With character limits in tweets, status updates and other modes of short form publishing, a shorter URL leaves more room to say what's on your mind — and that's why people use them.

First, we think people who use the Google Toolbar and FeedBurner will benefit from a shortener that is easily accessible — making it faster and easier to share, post and email links. Second, we've built this on Google's global infrastructure to offer the following benefits:

* Stability: Google's scalable, multi-datacenter infrastructure provides great uptime and a reliable service to our users.
* Security: As we do with web search, shortened URLs are automatically checked to detect sites that may be malicious and warn users when the short URL resolves to such sites.
* Speed: At Google we like fast products and we've worked hard to ensure this service is quick. We'll continue to iterate and improve the speed of Google Url Shortener.

Google URL shortener is not a stand-alone service; you can't use it to shorten links directly. Currently, Google URL Shortener is only available from the Google Toolbar and FeedBurner. If the service proves useful, we may eventually make it available for a wider audience in the future.

Google Pagerank Update Schedule in 2010

Google Pagerank has conducted an audit of the entire blog and website on March 31 until April 1, 2010. It was the first period of four planned Google pagerank schedule update. And should be proud, Duoduck have gained pagerank ranking on the first update of this one. I hope this blog PageRank continues to rise on Google's schedule every update.

Yesterday while visiting one of forums that discuss about SEO, I saw one post that discusses Google Pagerank Update schedule and I think useful for all, here are some schedules that might deserve to be the reference.

* First 2010 PageRank Update (31 March – 1 April 2010)
* Second 2010 PageRank Update (31 June – 1 July 2010)
* Third 2010 PageRank Update (31 September – 1 October 2010)
* Fourth 2010 PageRank Update (31 December – 1 January 2011)

By knowing a little about pagerank update schedule, it is expected that we can better optimize things that can improve the pagerank on time. The report says that over a third (37%) of consumers don't use a social networking site, and that those who have become a "fan" or "friend" of a company or brand online are still in the minority.

Is email marketing more effective than social media for you? Let us know.

The report is based on a survey of over 1,400 U.S. consumers, which the firm calls "nationally representative."

While Facebook may think email is "probably going away," marketers are still having a great deal of success with it. And just as increased mobile adoption continues to fuel social media use, it's not exactly hurting email.

The report suggests that the rise of mobile will continue fuel email's success. It notes that each generation of chipsets moves mobile devices closer to the personal computer. "Advanced behaviors today (accessing the Internet or checking email from a mobile device) will clearly soon be commonplace, at least for people in their working years. Nearly two-thirds of people under 24 have checked email on a mobile device," Econsultancy says.

Google to leave China?

CEO of Google Inc. Eric Schmidt said their business in China were stable after they were shut down by the government for censorship issues. “We maintain our business relationships and our engineering centers in China. A spokeswoman reiterated Google's previous assertions that the attacks on the company didn't obtain any personal information from its users' e-mail accounts.

The stolen password system was called Gaia, a reference to the Greek goddess of earth, according to the Times. Besides e-mail, Gaia also governed access to the online services that Google sells to businesses, government agencies and schools.

Without providing specifics, Google acknowledged some of its intellectual property had been stolen when it announced the hacking attacks in January. The heist prompted Google to tighten its computer security.

At least 20 other companies were targeted in similar attacks, according to Google.

The breach incensed Google so much that the company decided to protest the country's laws dictating the censorship of Internet search results deemed to be subversive or pornographic by the government. Google started censoring in China four years ago when it set up a search engine inside of the country to gain better access to the world's largest Web audience.

After unsuccessfully trying to negotiate a compromise with China's ruling party, Google last month began to shift search requests from mainland China to Hong Kong, where online censorship isn't required.

Google shifts China search service to Hong Kong

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 217px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_GMxCfebc_xY/S8r413aPRQI/AAAAAAAAASM/LJieOjALmPQ/s320/0113-China-Google-Flowers-logo_full_600.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5461451102430905602" />
San Francisco: Google Inc said visitors to its China search engine Google.cn are being redirected to the Hong Kong-based google.com.hk, following unsuccessful talks with the Chinese government about operating an uncensored search engine in the country.

Commentary

TIM GHRISKEY, CHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICER, SOLARIS ASSET MANAGEMENT

"Near-term, not that big a deal. "China has been a sales center for Microsoft from early on, and later became an R&D center. Now it is a strategic center."

He said a Microsoft R&D center in Shanghai would be able to house up to 1,500 people in its first stage, eventually expandable to 7,000. The company was also putting its Asia R&D headquarters in Beijing, he added, at a centre now under construction that will be able to accommodate 8,000 researchers.

Microsoft is active on a number of fronts in China. Apart from software sales and R&D, the company also operates instant messaging and other Web services in China, including a Chinese version of its highly-hyped Bing search engine that it hopes will someday take on Google.

Last month, Google announced that it would close its Google.cn search engine following a hacking attack that it believes originated in the country. The move was also a protest over China's heavy-handed policies that require all website operators to filter results on sensitive topics like Tibetan independence and the banned Falun Gong spiritual movement.

Despite closing its search site, Google still operates its own R&D center in China, and sells advertising there for its Chinese language search sites.

Microsoft launched a beta version of its Bing search engine in China last June, but has yet to pick up any major share from market leaders Google and homegrown search engine Baidu (BIDU.O), which collectively control more than 90 percent of the market.

"Bing's technology and markets have just started to develop," Zhang said. "In China we are already expending a big effort in this. Even though we are still well behind the market leaders, we need to become even more committed and be patient."

"Bing has huge potential, so we are very optimistic about the future," he said.

China has the world's largest Internet market by users, with 384 million at the end of last year, according to government statistics.

The value of China's search market rose 38.8 percent in 2009 to 7.15 billion yuan ($1 billion), on the back of greater Internet penetration, said research firm Analysys International. Baidu had 60.9 percent of the market by revenue, while Google (GOOG.O) had 31.8 percent.

Google in China

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 180px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_GMxCfebc_xY/S7jHO1QFrVI/AAAAAAAAARY/vZ2jh8jmpCw/s320/Google+China.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5456330006186011986" />
Google's move to redirect visitors from its China website to a new service in Hong Kong, where they can access uncensored search results may be significant more for its long-term commercial impact than for its political overtones. A loss of revenue from China at current levels should not be a cause for worry, given that it is only a small percentage of the whole. Yet the comments made by Google co-founder Sergey Brin after his company decided to stop filtering search results on its China website are important. He described services and information as America's most successful exports, and sought the Obama administration's intervention to ensure that these are allowed to flow without any barriers. In any case, there has been no closure of operations by Google in China. It is also not a market that it is likely to ignore in the future. There is genuine worry, though, that Google's decision to stop filtering search results (required by Chinese law) and to relocate its service to Hong Kong may politicise commercial issues. Clearly, China's importance on the online landscape cannot be exaggerated. As a country with 385 million Internet users, most of them having access to broadband (minimally defined), and the world's biggest mobile phone market with nearly 750 million connections, it offers great value to business. Foreign companies offering online services acknowledge it and have refrained from disengaging from this fast-emerging economy over political issues. Moreover, it is relevant to point out that, although advocates of freedom justifiably demand unfettered access to everything on the Internet, oversight and some level of governmental control is maintained.

As the Internet evolves, governments are challenged to respond to the new information culture without curbing free speech. From a time when relatively few producers generated content for a large number of consumers, the world has come a long way and is now a networked web of people who themselves produce and share content. The explosive growth in the use of mobile devices to create and share text, pictures and videos via the Internet has added a potent dimension to this ongoing revolution. Yet nothing of what is produced is really shielded from scrutiny. It is well known that governments can and do access and monitor the enormous amounts of data that flow through digital pipes including e-mails. Google services are no exception. What governments need to acknowledge is that the mindset of traditional controls on the movement of goods and services across borders is outdated, because information moves across national borders instantaneously.

SEO Friendship !
